Regardless of which area of the United States you live in, one of the most common pesky problem of your apartment are cockroaches. They usually appear in the summer months, especially in the Midwest as the temperature is hot and humid outside. Also, they are a common house problem in Asian countries.
If you think you see a cockroach in your apartment, but aren’t positive that’s what it is, consider the following characteristics that are common of roaches. They:
Are brown, reddish, or beige in color and they have two long antennae on their head. They are usually spotted crawling on floors, but can fly; and are between 1 – 1.5 inches long.
Spotting three or more of these during one day means you may have a roach problem in your apartment. So, let’s look at how this type of problem comes to be and how you can fix it.
Crumbs and dirty dishes are one of the main causes of a roach infestation. These insects inhibit on food and moisture, so they’re often found in the kitchen and bathroom. One of the best ways to prevent roaches from roaming around your apartment is to clean your dishes immediately after use and make sure all your food are stored in an airtight container. It can be a challenge though when you’re in an apartment because no matter how clean you are, your neighbors may be dirty. That is something you cannot control.
So, what should you do if you notice roaches in your apartment? Contact management immediately. Usually, a member of the maintenance staff will come spray the apartment, or they’ll call pest control to come exterminate the bugs. There are also a few things you can do on your own:
First is to purchase roach traps. Stores like Wal-Mart or Home Depot usually have varieties of this stuff which you can choose from. Have them in areas throughout your kitchen and bathroom. These work well to kill individual roaches. In cases of infestation though, you should consider pest control instead to handle the cockroaches in your apartment.
Also, purchase cockroach poison. This is the common stuff used for quick extermination. Usually, this is placed on cracks in the floorboards, behind the kitchen sink, under the windowsills, etc. The boric acid-based poison will get on the roach and they’ll lick it clean and die.
Cockroach infestations are a disturbing problem in apartments and dealing with it should be done right away – for your well-being and peace of mind. Keep in mind the above tips if you see a roach in your apartment and you can get rid of the pesky critters in no time.
