When a chemical like carbon monoxide is nicknamed as the silent killer, you would immediately infer that this substance is extremely dangerous and risky. Carbon monoxide is a deadly type of chemical that is present in most of our homes. If we are not able to take the necessary precautions, we could suffer from illness, suffocation and even death. Because of the serious effects of this chemical, being able to treat it with a sense of urgency should be prioritized.

Most people do not realize the existence of carbon monoxide in their homes simply because it is virtually invisible. With no odor, taste or even smell, the human senses will not be able to know whether one is already being exposed to the harsh toxins brought by the substance. When someone is poisoned by carbon monoxide, anyone can easily assume that the person affected is just having a bad case of flu. The symptoms will be similar, but what they do not know is that what seems to be just the flu can cause someone’s life if not acted upon immediately.

Once a person is exposed to carbon monoxide, immediate effects would be likened to that of the flu. It will be very difficult for anyone to assume that symptoms of the flu could be lethal, so we need to be able to find the true sources of carbon monoxide in our homes.

Fuel burning appliances are a common source of carbon monoxide. This includes gas stoves, ovens, water heaters and refrigerators. Make sure that these electronic devices are not subject to leaks and buildup.

Aside from that, car exhaust systems and heating systems are also two major sources that can often be overlooked. When working in a garage or in an indoor parking lot, make sure that you leave the doors open to make sure that we don’t run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Thankfully, technology has introduced the carbon monoxide detectors to help us know immediately if the carbon monoxide levels reach a certain point. The alarm would immediately go off once the device senses the presence of the chemical. In the event that you are going to hear the alarm sound off, that should be the go signal for you and your family to get out of the house as soon as you can. If there is an opportunity for you to find the source in a safe way, you can also opt to do so.

With these in mind, one of our most important questions would be how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from harming our family and our homes. What you can easily do is ask your plumbing or utility technician about the possibility of installing carbon monoxide detectors in your house. Once the device is able to detect the substance, the alarm will set off immediately. In the event that this happens, you need to make sure that you are able to act fast and with a heightened sense of urgency! Try to find someone that will be able to detect the source. You can also opt to call for help. A neighbor’s phone number or your local gas, plumbing or utility hotline should be handy in times of emergency.

Being able to take the right preventive measures against the dangers of carbon monoxide will really prove to be beneficial. If you are able to start by having a gas or plumbing technician install all the electronic gadgets and appliances in your home, that would help avoid any mistakes in applying the right parts. A skilled professional will understand exactly what needs to be done.
