Among the classic, ethnic or traditional foods, there are unlimited kinds from which to choose. It is always best to talk to the chef who will be actually cooking or supervising the food. Some wedding caterers may be a one-man show and will only serve small groups, and some may have a large staff and will accommodate huge wedding parties. There are so many different kinds of wedding caterers; the bride needs to find the right one that will make her reception perfect.

Good wedding caterers will listen to the bride to understand the mood and theme she wants. They will then try their best to find a way to make it possible. Sometimes, the items on the menu selected by the couple may not be a good choice or may not blend harmoniously with each other. At this point, the wedding caterer needs to be a diplomat and gently suggest a more compatible menu. A wedding caterer should also give the couple a realistic picture of what is possible within their budget. In this way, they will get the best possible reception for the amount they can afford. If the couple can’t decide between menu items, it is customary for wedding caterers to supply tasting sessions. Along with the food for the reception, the wedding caterer may also supply many other items including the wait staff to serve the food, flowers and table decorations, the wedding cake and even all the place settings and tablecloths, if they are not available at the site. Some wedding caterers will take charge of the whole party from the sound and lighting to cleaning the site including gifts for the guests.

It is important for the bride, the couple or the bride’s parents to be very clear what is being provided and how much each item costs. The contract should contain an itemized list with the price of each item and service. Finding the right caterer takes a little research. Unless one is already known to the couple, it is best to ask friends and family if they have any suggestions. Good hotels will probably have in-house wedding caterers but a florist, bridal salon or photographer will also know a few and can make recommendations. A caterer may make excellent food, but it must harmonize with the theme of the wedding. Asking for 10 or more references from a caterer is standard, and they will be willing to provide a list of their most recent wedding parties. This way there are not unwelcome surprises at the last minute such as a late arrival or badly dressed serving staff. Once the right wedding caterer is found, feel free to book them far in advance. They are very familiar with pre-wedding jitters and changed minds. The more time they have to consider a wedding reception, the better it will be.
