The process of carrying the resources and products from their place of manufacture to the place of consumption as per the demand of the market is known as Logistics. The term was originally applied to armed forces where it was necessary to supply the rations, arms and ammunition to the forces from the base camp. In the context of an army, logistic solutions are very important as an army is entirely dependent upon timely supplies of provisions.

In the present times the logistics solutions are applied on other sectors also such as exports, imports, customs, manufacturing, wholesaling and mainly in transport business. This whole concept was derived to manage the supply of commodities at the target areas in the complex system of global supply chain. Logistics involves forecasting the activity for implementing and planning the strategy of supply chain for business houses keeping in view the market trends and statistics. The strategies provided are cost effective and result oriented for transfer and delivery of goods, as these are the main focus areas of logistics solutions.

A warehouse management system forms the central kiosk of such a supply chain, controlling the receipt, storage and movement of materials within a warehouse and involving processes like transactions, shipping, receiving, picking, loading, unloading, etc. Today inventory planning, cost management and communication technology also constitutes a part of logistics solution for transportation businesses.

Reaching to the customer with maximum efficiency with the minimum of effort and cost has become a source of headache for the manufacturers with rising cost of transportation with each passing day. It is because of this reason that a clear analysis of the demands of markets in various regions is essential for the manufacturers. Apart from this, the analysis of the set up and design of the logistic center is also of paramount importance. Allowance for re-slotting of this distribution center depending upon changes in the market demands is a must. These procedures have to be completed while keeping in mind the cost involved and the space available, and also the availability of cheap labor and ease of transportation. For the best possible solution for a manufacturer, a thorough analysis of the logistics is a prerequisite.

The last century saw a decline in importance of the traditional methods of transport with the emergence of modern systems like JIT, or Just In Time system, which does away with intermediaries like warehouses and involves timely deliveries to the customer from the manufacturers. This obviously reduces the time and cost involved in transportation and the process of security is also done away with. But in cases where off shoring is required, warehousing is a necessity. This is why any logistics planner has to keep in mind all the factors before he can come up with the best possible location for the warehouses. A recent concept where retailing has been done from the warehouse itself has become very popular. This idea of using a warehouse for retail purposes is very appealing to the manufacturers as it significantly reduces the cost to the end user and also increases the production sales ratio.

The introduction of internet and e-commerce has also left a strong impact on the development of logistic solutions in the field of warehousing distribution. Internet-based stores do not require a chain of outlets to sell their products; instead, their focus remains on a well-maintained delivery section and in this case again, warehouses serve no more than storage units.
