One of the original ways that computer networks were created was through a network hub. Networks hubs have been around for a long time, but are slowly being weeded out with new advancements. We will explain more about hubs and computer networks in this article.
Network hubs look like similar to a cable box with outlets or ports in the back. These ports look like Ethernet ports but are used only to connect to each computer. The network hub links all the computers together forming an LAN.
An LAN stands for Local Area Network. An LAN allows multiple computers to share files. The files are sent through the hub and made accessible by all other computers on the LAN.
It’s not very hard to set up your LAN. The biggest pain is finding ways to hide all the wires and cables. You will need your cables to extend from your hub to each computer. Smaller spaces have a much easier time with this set up.
Hubs were and still are used for many things. Many businesses use them as do schools. Another popular reason hubs are used is to set up a gaming network to play games together.
A hub also needs another network adaptor in order to access the internet. You will need to plug an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on that adaptor. The Ethernet port looks just like the ports on the hub.
The reason that hubs are hardly used anymore is because they do not filter traffic. This not only jams the network, making computers really slow but it also increases the risk of network attacks. This can be prevented with a firewall which is now offered in most routers.
Hubs are fairly basic devices for networking computers. They are slowly being weeded out as switches and other alternatives are made available. Hubs have laid the foundation for advancements in the world of computer networking.
