You don’t need to have been in your college Dean’s List or be a trained teacher to give your children a quality home school education. The main factors that determine a child’s success would be commitment, concern and a genuine desire to give your child a quality home school education.

Most home school parents are not professional teachers – in fact, not all are college graduates – so they should choose a teaching style that is best suited for their child’s personality and desired learning style.

There is no absolute means to determine the most efficient and effective teacher – but an ideal home school parent should be both in one way or another, showing dedication to work and a love for the job.

For a home school parent to teach their child in the best way possible, here are a few tips.

Decide on the best curriculum for your child. Proper goal setting and seeing if it can be achieved is important in choosing a curriculum. Take a good look at your curriculum and see if it meets both the goals set by your state and the preferences and capabilities of your child.

Prepare yourself well. Before you start teaching your child, you need to know the curriculum you’ll be teaching.

Be familiar with your child’s learning preferences. Effectiveness in teaching can only be achieved if you have properly determined what suits your child’s learning needs. For example, if your child responds well to visual cues, use videos and books to get your lesson plan across. On the other hand, there are children who respond better to spoken word, so you can use music and reading aloud to make them learn effectively.

Encourage your children creatively. Two-way communication between child/student and parent/teacher is important here. When your child is asking questions during the lesson, he or she can get the information requested from you, the parent and the teacher, and also be more open in communicating with you regarding the subject matter, as well as other things.

Adjust to your child’s needs. Your children, just like ordinary students, will find certain parts of the curriculum difficult to comprehend, so this is when you will give him or her more time to grasp the lesson, while you think of alternative ways to help them understand. Your children should not be expected to go beyond their learning capacities. Adjust to your children as they adjust to your curriculum.

You are still your child’s parent first and foremost. As a parent, you know what would suit your child the best. If you follow your parental instinct, you can be a great home school teacher. And this, eventually, can be second nature.
