Bar Stools are available in a bewildering range of heights. There are many Bar Stools, with seat heights in the range 700 to about 810 mm. (27 ” to 32″). These are primarily designed for use at Drinks Bars or High Bar (Poseur) Tables, which are about 1000 to 1100 mm high ( 39″ to 43″). Some raised kitchen islands or raised Breakfast Bars may be in this range also.

Often the Breakfast Bar is just an extension from the normal kitchen worktops. This will have a height of about 36 inches (920 mm) from floor to top surface. The comfortable Bar Stool seat height for this layout is between 25 and 26 inches (650 to 680 mm). If the seat is much higher than 26 inches (680 mm) you will bang your knees. If the seat is much lower than 25 inches (650 mm) then your elbows will hit the worktop.

What is the magic formula? It is quite simple. If you sit at a standard dining table, it is probably about 720 to 760 mm high. (28 ” to 30″). A normal dining chair is about 450 to 480 mm ( 17 ” to 19″). That is comfortable for most people. The comfort is defined by the difference between the seat and the table top – about 250 to 280 mm ( 10″ to 11″). This difference in heights will always be the comfortable level irrespective of the table and seat heights.

If you want to sit at a standard kitchen breakfast bar with an overall height of about 36 inches (920 mm), then the comfortable height for your Bar Stool will be about 36 less 10 inches = 26 inches seat height. (920 less 270 mm = 650 mm seat height). You can calculate the ideal seat height for any worktop by deducting 10 inches ( 270 mm) from the overall worktop height. Very tall people or short people may prefer a slight variation on this formula but there will not be much difference.

Check your own statistics by sitting at a dining table. Do you find it comfortable to eat? If it is too high or too low, then use something like a telephone directory to raise the level of the seat or the table top. Once you find the ideal level then measure the difference between the table top and the chair. Is it around 10 inches (270 mm)? Keep a note of the result so that you know what seat height of Bar Stools to order

There are many Bar Stools with Different Fixed Seat Heights that may suit your needs. Alternatively there are Gas Lift (Adjustable Height) Bar stools that can be altered to suit your needs. A good supplier should show the seat height, or height range, for all Bar Stools, because it is so crucial.
