Colorado Buffaloes football has been in existence sine 1890. The program has compiled a record of 665-435-36 in 119 years of play. That accumulates to a winning percentage of just under 61%. They rank #16 in total wins all time & also a 22nd ranking with that winning percentage. The Buffs play at Folsom Field which has been the home of the Colorado football since 1924. The team has played in a total of 27 bowl games with a record of 12-15 in those games. The school even has a national championship title back in 1990. Actually, the title was split with Georgia Tech. The head coach of that team was Bill McCartney. He coached the Buffaloes for 13 seasons.
Colorado currently plays in the Big 12 conference. They’ve been a member of this conference since 1996. However, in June of 2010, Colorado accepted an invitation to play in the PAC-10 conference. The switch will not take effect until the 2012 season. Colorado has quite a few former players that played in the NFL as well as some current NFL players. Some of the more noted current NFL players are Mason Crosby (K), Justin Bannan (DT), Tyler Brayton (DE), Andre Gurode (C), & Chris Brown (RB). These are just to name a few. Chris Brown was a well known figure in Colorado during his days as a running back.
The Buffaloes has numerous notable former players. Some are still playing at the next level while others are no longer able. Some of the more notable current pro players are a kicker, a defensive end, & a RB. In more recent years, one current NFL player (Chris Brown) was well known for his running days while at Colorado. There were also some very notably former Buffalo & NFL participants. Retired players include a former Heisman winner (Rashaan Salaam, 1994). Also, a former RB (Eric Bienemy) that was third for Heisman back in 1990. A QB (Kordell Stewart) that has quite few of the all-time passing records at Colorado.
A legendary coach (Bill McCartney) took over for 13 years beginning in 1982. He’s the coach that has the most victories in school history. He’s also the one & only coach that brought a championship the program as well. He coached the likes of Rashaan Salaam, Eric Bienemy, & Kordell Stewart. No wonder he won a national championship. Past success doesn’t always mean recent success. The current skipper (Dan Hawkins) hasn’t provided the winning ways of past Colorado football. Tension is in the air in Colorado about his possible departure. Early on in the football program there was a player(Byron White) that was runner-up in the Heisman. Quite a few years later (57 as a matter of fact) there was a running back(Rashaan Salaam) that didn’t finish second. He took home the most coveted award(Heisman) in college football. He also had a couple other honors in his name.
Not to be left out of the conversation were a QB (Stewart) & another RB (Chris Brown). Both Stewart & Brown were in the running for the Heisman during their respective years in the program. Even an award for the dean (Bill McCartney) of Colorado coaching back in 1989. He deserved it for sure by leading his team to being the best in college football by claiming a national title in 1990.
