Remodeling a basement can turn that dark forgotten space in your home into almost anything you can dream up – or your budget can stand. Every year thousands of homeowners get their game room ,home office or even the home gym they have been longing for.
Choosing from amongst the many flooring options can be hard whatever room you might be remodeling but basement flooring presents an extra challenge. Basements,by nature tend to be a little damp, which could rule certain flooring options out of the equation.
A major part of any successful basement remodel is ensuring that the space is dry as it possibly can be.One of the simplest ways to determine how moist your current basement flooring is to take a simple black trash bag and seal pieces of it to various areas of the floor. Leave it for about 24 hours and then check underneath. If there is any condensation build up then you almost certainly have a moisture issue that should be addressed before any new flooring is laid.
Once you have determined that your basement is relatively dry you can begin looking at the different types of flooring that work well in a basement. Here is the lowdown on the most popular:
Engineered Hardwood Flooring – This is a flooring material that is designed specifically to withstand a great deal more moisture than traditional natural hardwood flooring. It is also generally thinner than hardwood allowing for the installation of extra insulation, something that many basements will benefit from in the long run.
Laminates – In a (fairly) dry basement laminate is a fabulous way to bring the look of hardwood to a basement remodel for a lot less. You should be cautious when choosing your laminates though as some types do very poorly in areas where there is even a little moisture. As water damaged laminate flooring is almost impossible to restore then you should ask a professional flooring expert for their opinion before you buy.
Ceramic Tiling – Ceramic tiling works very well in the basement as long as the subfloor to which it is to be attached is dry enough to permanently hold the flooring adhesive. For this reason it is very important that the person installing the tile has made all the right subfloor preparations before the tile is laid.
Flooring Options that may not work Well – Justifying the expense (and risk) involved in installing solid hardwood flooring in a below grade installation is hard to do. Engineered hardwood really is the better way to go below ground and the results are every bit as beautiful.
Carpet in the basement can be risky as well. Even the driest of basements often have more humidity than the rest of the house and completely carpeting an entire basement can be an invitation to mold and mildew (and ruined carpeting.) If you really want the comfort of carpeting to be a feature in your remodeled basement though it’s easy to achieve with a few well-placed area rugs.
