Despite the dangers of suntanning in natural sunlight, including accelerated ageing and skin cancer, people still seek the glowing effect that softly bronzed skin provides. We look somehow healthier and more attractive – even thinner – with a tan. Because of the dangers, you need to wear good sunscreen and develop a natural tan slowly – very slowly. If you don’t have the time or patience for it, consider a spray tan. Spray tanning at the salon will give you a healthy glow, safely, and it looks natural too.

Sun beds or sun lights are no safer than direct sunlight as they use UV lights that are as detrimental as direct sunlight. They do however offer the opportunity to get a tan in the middle of winter. Self-applied suntan lotions that artificially cause your skin to darken are difficult to apply properly, and the colour never looks natural. We’ve all experienced the orange streaky effect of fake tans, not to mention orange palms from applying it.

Spray tanning at the salon removes all these obstacles. It is safe, as no UV lights are used. It is evenly applied by one of two methods, so it looks natural. You can also get an all-over tan, useful if you’re heading to an exotic location where topless bathing is de rigeur. The spray tanning process takes place in a spray booth. The booth may be equipped with airbrush nozzles that spray the tanning lotion from all directions at once to give you even, all-over coverage. You can ‘mask off’ areas you do not want tanned if required. A thin, paler line strategically placed can look like a tan line – a clever way to make your spray tan look even more natural.

The second method is applied by a technician who sprays the product onto you with a portable spray machine. This also provides an even coverage, and if the technician is properly trained, they will know which areas to cover lightly, and which to saturate a little more to make the tan look natural. Both methods are much safer than natural sunlight or sunbeds as there is no exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays. The advantage over sprays and lotions you apply yourself is that spray tanning in the salon, with either method, reaches areas that you cannot see never mind reach.

The one drawback is that spray tanning at a salon is a short-term solution. Much like self-applied lotions, the colour fades quite quickly, lasting only about 7 days. This is however, long enough for you to glow at a special occasion such as a wedding or business function. It is also enough time to take you on summer vacation – by the time it starts fading you’ll have built up your natural tan safely and gradually using loads of sunscreen anyway. Bathing and swimming often may cause the tan to fade quicker.

Sunbeds, self-tanning lotions and natural sunlight are either dangerous to your health, difficult to apply, or have a less-than-ideal result. Try spray tanning at the salon – the safe tanning solution that looks good all year round.
