If you don’t live in a recently built home and want to save more money, aside from the new energy efficient appliances home improvement chains are constantly advertising these days, you could also consider the new exterior energy efficient additions such as windows and doors.

Like Energy Star appliances, new energy efficient windows can save on your monthly utility bills and, while not qualifying for a quick cash rebate, mean you can claim a tax credit of up to $1,500 when you file your income taxes next year.

This tax credit is part of the stimulus bill and is intended for those who upgrade their homes with energy efficient appliances or make exterior improvements like windows, doors and skylights. Not including the installation, up to 30 percent of the product’s price will be deducted from your income tax next year.

Those savings will be a one-time affair, but you’ll also save every month for as long as your own your home by spending less every month to heat or cool your residence. If you make an approximate calculation you will see that it is hundreds of dollars that you will be able to save every year. Another benefit aside from the less costly yet far improved conditions in your home, is that by consuming less energy you also help improve the environment. Also, if you don’t have a recently built home with all the modern materials and accessories, these new additions will bring a higher price in case you want to sell it.

You should purchase no windows, doors or skylights if their warranty certificate doesn’t include a statement from the manufacturer underwriting their eligibility for the tax credit.

Even if you’re good with handiwork, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you hired someone to install your windows. Your best bet may be to take advantage of the services of a company that measures your windows, has new windows made to fit, removes your old, drafty windows, and puts the new windows in, all in the period of a few weeks. These companies range from national chains that will also provide financing for the work, to local companies that may be able to offer better prices.

Do not choose a company or a window before doing some research on them first. No matter if it’s a national or local brand of window, it is worthless if it has a low rate of keeping cold air and solar energy out. In order to qualify for the tax credit, the window you choose shouldn’t have a U-factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) higher than 0.30, so you need to check the window’s label or the company information to find out its energy performance. If the type of window you’ve considered qualifies, you should get product and installation estimates before making any decision. You should also keep in mind that the installation of windows is better done on good weather, so consider that before you schedule it.

Once that’s done, get ready for savings and more comfortable living in your home.
