Beginning the college process can be a daunting task because there is no fixed formula for getting into college and moreover, whatever combination of courses one studied at high school makes no difference in the success rate of getting admission to your dream school.

There is no denying that academic grades, standardized test scores and class standing are all factors which will be considered by admissions committees. Having a successful record in these areas will undoubtedly be sufficient for entry into some colleges, it does not automatically guarantee admission to your ideal schools. Indeed, there are always examples of students who, despite achieving perfect test scores and academic transcripts, still fail to gain acceptance into certain of the most selective schools.

The following are some suggestions that may be useful as you begin the admissions cycle and attempt to craft the perfect college application.

Colleges are looking for motivated, well rounded students who can show that they have good time management abilities. These are often the qualities that tip the scale in favor of one student over another student who focused solely on their studies. Having extra curricular activities and volunteer work show a drive and a selflessness that appeals to admission counselors who are inundated with more applications than they have the room to accept.

Awards or other recognitions and achievements can weigh into your application’s consideration. Be sure to inform them if you have achieved any because good colleges and universities look for leaders and achievers and not just academic performers.

It may seem like a pain to ask for references from high school counselors and teachers, but do it anyway because these letters do matter. Ask the teachers with whom you have a good rapport and chances are those teachers will be willing to help you out.

Sometimes, it’s not just what you know, but who you know. If you have a family friend or relative who attended the same college you’d like to get into, then make that known. It just may sweeten the pot in your favor.

It is of vital importance to begin the process early in order to maximize your chances of admission. Conduct thorough research, gather the most recent materials from popular schools and make sure you understand their admission standards right from the start.

So remember these tips to help you get into the college of your dreams.
