There’s a good chance that you’ve come across the word “meme” at some point or another in the past few years. It’s an arcane academic concept but at the same time it’s also one of those things that you can identify, but can’t describe easily.Richard Dawkins coined the phrase in an effort to help explain cultural evolution in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, where it’s defined as a shared element intended to be passed around within a culture, a societal analog to a gene. Everything from Tamagotchis to “That’s what she said” count as memes. On the Internet , memes are more visible than ever before, and what’s more, they’re also serious business. Now, even though it may not be immediately apparent, there are a number of universal qualities that all successful viral memes have in common.

1. Nice Content

To capture audience’s attention, great content is the first way to go. As long as it is relevant and well-packaged, people will be attracted to your site. There are 2 main genre of content: the creative, authentic ones and the shorter, ordinary ones. It all depends on your talent. If you are too lazy to write a loaded piece, you can always keep it real and produce loosely organized content.

2. Light-heartedness

People go to the Internet for a good laugh more than some grand philosophies. So keep your content as delightful to read as you can.

Sometimes you don’t even need to build something fancy and custom yourself. This Is Why You’re Fat runs off of Tumblr , which is a great platform for testing out whether or not the public will eat up your idea, and also has integrated sharing features which is helpful for growth. Depending on what your project is, you may not need to expand beyond it, but if you do, the next step up would be a service like WordPress , which affords the administrator more customized options. You can always build your own site, but that can often be time and cash-intensive.

3. Emote

People will love your site for their being related to its content. Choose a topic with which people can associate themselves, whether it is about family or pets. It will then be much easier to gather people who feel the same way.

4. Own Your Space

Any popular websites have one thing in common, that they are special and one of a kind. Nobody can ever take over their well established status, for they are being nobody but themselves.

5. Keep sharing

Implementation of social plugins to your website can maintain the circulation of your content on the Internet. Don’t put your effort into waste. Give readers a chance to spread your message across the sea of the World Wide Web by establishing your profile on different social platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and Stumble Upon.

6. Protect Your Ideas

If you don’t want your written content to be riped off by any Internet users, get some help from Google Alerts. If necessary, hire a lawyer to send out warning letters to those shameless copycats. In most cases, unauthentic content will be removed immediately.

7. Evaluate

Self evaluation is all good but allowing others to evaluate your content and make suggestion is of equal importance. There is no bigger secret of keeping the running of a website than to serve what people want.
