One of the big problems on some work sites is the creation and control of dust as the manufacturing process takes place. This creates a number of hazards for those working in the area including respiratory risks and an impairment of vision. An effective method of suppressing dust in these situations is crucial to ensuring the continuing smooth operation of the site.
One of the simplest and cheapest ways in which dust may be suppressed is through the use of a misting system which can be installed around the entire site. This low-cost solution is capable of quickly clearing the air of extremely small dust particles and can do so at the turn of a water tap.
The system works by creating a mist blanket which envelops the airborne dust particles. The water droplets that comprise the mist are created by misting nozzles and the droplets themselves are extremely small, around the same size as the dust particles. The mist attracts the particles of dust and they bind together making them heavy and causing them to fall to the ground.
The system is generally a network of water pipes with the misting nozzles scattered at regular intervals directed towards the areas where they are needed. None of this equipment is particularly expensive, it’s simply a matter of having the installation performed to your required specifications so that it quickly overcomes the dust in the spots where it is most needed. The ongoing costs amount to the water supply which is usually quite low at around 1 gallon of water usage for every misting nozzle in use.
There is an added benefit to using this system, particularly when it is operated in the summer time or when the worksite is a particularly warm site and that is that the mist acts as an air conditioner. Conditions surrounding the mist area become significantly cooler thanks to the water vapour in the air.
This type of system is not only used effectively on industrial sites but also in waste management, agricultural uses and is now becoming more commonly used in domestic circumstances.
