How To Kill Fleas In Carpet

If you’ve ever had fleas lurking around in your carpet and biting you on your feet then you know how irritating that can be.  Unfortunately, the over the counter products leave must to be desired plus the harmful chemicals in the sprays and fogs can be quite damaging to your health.

Checking the source of the fleas is important but the problem at hand is how to kill fleas that get in the carpet.  These tiny creatures although small can be quite relentless when it comes to their survival.  A quick education about fleas is half the battle.  Adult flees are blood sucking organisms  that stay alive by feeding on mammals.

Once the eggs fall from the host (mammal) they land in your carpet and will normally hatch in a couple of weeks.  The young fleas are called larvae can live in your carpet up to one year before turning into full grown fleas.  As you can quickly see if this problem is not handled properly you can end up with what is called mass manifestation.  At this point you can have a very serious flea problem but don’t fret just yet because we’re going to get rid of those little suckers.

1. Isolate and treat the infected host and remove from the infested area.
2. Wash all linens, rugs and throws in warm soapy water because flea eggs, larvae and fleas cannot survive in soapy water.
3. Thoroughly vacuum everything where the fleas where located.  Make sure you don’t forget the cracks, crevices and corners as these are some of the favorite places where fleas and their eggs to congregate.  After vacuuming discard the carpet bag and replace it with a new one.
4. Because larvae are bit more pesky and like to hang around in the fibers of your carpet it is also a great idea to have your carpet professionally steamed cleaned or you can rent a steam cleaner from your local home improvement store and do it yourself.  Using an insecticidal carpet shampoo along with the steam should take care of all stages of fleas and help remove any stains in your carpet.
